Is Invisalign Teen Right for My Child?
Does your teen want to improve the appearance and health of his or her smile? Just like adults, teens want to look their best and improve their “selfie confidence.” They also want to avoid metal brackets and wires whenever possible, so Invisalign offers an excellent solution. Clear aligners gradually move teeth into more optimal positions, in less time than it takes to complete a course of traditional braces. What’s not to love?
With over five million happy patients, Invisalign offers a uniquely effective system for realigning crooked and crowded-looking smiles. Since teens have taken such an interest in Invisalign, Invisalign has now taken an interest in teens! If your teenager is a good candidate, the Invisalign Teen system offers benefits that help parents and teens ensure a successful treatment and successful outcome.
Invisalign Teen; The Same System, Optimized for Teens
You probably know already what the benefits of Invisalign are. With more and more people taking advantage of clear aligner-based orthodontics, you know that Invisalign:
- Is virtually unnoticeable
- Does not force you to change what you eat
- Often moves the teeth faster than traditional braces
- Causes less sensitivity than tightening wires every month
- Improves your smile without adding the appearance of metal
Invisalign Teen offers all the same benefits as the standard treatment, with a few added bonuses to support teenagers’ unique needs.
The Blue Dot
One unique feature is the blue dot. Each set of aligners comes with a small blue dot that gradually wears away as the aligners are worn. If a young person is not wearing his or her aligners for the full 20-22 hours per day, the dot will not disappear and both parents and teens will know something needs to change. This helps parents monitor their child’s compliance with the treatment plan, and lets teens know whether they’re really wearing their aligners enough. This feature ensures that teens don’t stray too far from the treatment plan, which can require new aligners to be fabricated if they don’t log enough hours. We all know that teenagers are busier today than they’ve ever been. Between school, lunch breaks, sports, extra-curricular activities, and active social lives—it can be hard to self-monitor your aligner wear time. The blue dot makes it easier.
As adults, we get pretty set in our routines. Work, home, work, home, et cetera. Luckily, teenagers still have a bit of freedom in their daily lives to take part in activities that challenge and stimulate them. This can mean, however, that they may be more likely to lose their aligners from time to time. Sometimes they take out their aligners to eat popcorn at a movie, play a sport, or get ready for a social outing in their car. Invisalign Teen acknowledges that teens may be more likely to misplace or damage a set of aligners now and then, and provides a certain number of free replacement aligners when this happens.
Is My Teen a Good Candidate for Invisalign Teen?
If your child is interested in Invisalign, visit Dr. Ricardo Suarez in our West Covina, CA dental office. We will assess your child’s oral health and alignment issues. Invisalign works best on mild-to-moderate cases of malocclusion (misalignment), so severe cases may do better with traditional braces. For example, if your child has a severe bite problem, such as overbite, under bite, or open bite, he or she may not be able to use Invisalign. Your child should also have all his or her adult teeth and the facial bones should be finished growing.
Beyond the physical requirements, it’s important to remember that Invisalign requires a high level of patient compliance. A teenager will need to change how he or she eats (only at specific times) and must brush and floss the teeth after every meal, snack, and beverage before replacing the aligners back in the mouth. This means carrying around a hygiene kit at all times and not cheating on the “no eating when wearing the aligners” rule. Invisalign Teen works best when teens are highly motivated to improve their smiles.
