Improve Your Smile with Invisalign
Have you ever wished you could go back in time and fix your teeth? Many adults would love to have a more attractive smile, yet few want to spend two years wearing metal braces. Stainless steel bracket- and-wire braces can make you feel like an awkward adolescent again. The whole point is to make your smile look better, right?
Thanks to Invisalign clear braces, you can now improve your smile without having to worry about “metal mouth.” Invisalign’s clear acrylic aligners don’t change the color of your teeth, so you won’t have to sacrifice your appearance in order to improve it. In addition to its more discreet appearance, Invisalign also lets you avoid other hassles associated with braces, such as frequent visits to the dentist and dietary restrictions.
The Benefits of Straighter Teeth
Many patients seek out orthodontic treatments to improve the appearance of their smile, but there are health benefits to having proper tooth alignment.
- Straightened teeth are easier to keep clean, which helps you prevent tooth decay.
- Properly aligned teeth fit together better when you bite and chew.
- Correcting misaligned teeth can help prevent TMJ disorder and teeth grinding (bruxism).
When teeth are maloccluded (misaligned) they have the tendency to take more friction. This can erode enamel and make them more likely to crack. Teeth that have the right amount space around them are less vulnerable to tooth decay and less likely to crack and break prematurely.
Better alignment can also make you less likely to develop problems with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMJ disorder can lead to painful symptoms and weaken the teeth. When the teeth fit together better, the jaw joints function better and you are less likely to grind the teeth at night (bruxism).
How Invisalign Works
Invisalign and metal braces are both based on the same principle. With the application of constant, gentle pressure, teeth are slowly coaxed into more balanced and symmetrical state of alignment. Braces use brackets and wires to apply pressure; Invisalign uses a series of graduated acrylic aligners. Over time, very small changes add up to a brand-new appearance for your smile. Patients wear the aligners for 20-22 hours per day, and advance to the next set of aligners every two weeks. As the months go by, the teeth adjust to their new permanent positions.
Invisalign’s Advantages Over Metal Braces
You already know that clear aligners impact your appearance less than braces, but there are more advantages to consider.
- Invisalign usually works faster. The average treatment plan is 12-18 months vs. 24 months with braces.
- Fewer trips to the dentist during treatment: Invisalign check-ups take place every 6 weeks, as opposed to the monthly visit required for braces.
- No foods are off-limits with Invisalign. Remove the aligners, and you can eat whatever you like.
- Invisalign is removable for special occasions (weddings, important business meetings, photographs, etc.).
Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Use Invisalign?
Invisalign adult braces may be more convenient and versatile than metal braces, but it isn’t right for everyone. Aligner-based orthodontics work best on patients with mild-to-moderate malocclusion and only mild bite issues. If your teeth are severely misaligned (or if you have a severe overbite, underbite, or open bite) you may not be a good candidate for Invisalign.
Invisalign also requires a high level of patient compliance to be effective. This means you have to be committed to improving your smile if you want to see results. If there’s any chance you won’t log the full 20-22 hours of wear time every day, you might do better with braces.
